Users bombard ChatGPT with an enormous flood of requests every day. Developer OpenAI now reveals impressive usage figures.

Users worldwide send a considerable number of prompts to ChatGPT every day. As OpenAI has now announced to Axios, there are now 2.5 billion requests per day. Around 330 million of these submissions come from the USA alone. These figures show just how important the AI chatbot has become in everyday life.

For comparison: Google’s parent company Alphabet does not publish daily search statistics, but recently announced that Google processes 5 trillion search queries per year – that corresponds to almost 14 billion daily searches.

Hidden costs through politeness

A curious detail in passing: the sheer volume of prompts also leads to unexpected cost factors. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently confirmed on X that polite phrases such as “please” and “thank you” in user queries cost the company “tens of millions”. What seems harmless adds up to a considerable cost factor with 2.5 billion daily prompts. Every additional word in a request consumes computing capacity and therefore electricity – multiplied by billions of requests, this results in considerable additional costs.

The rapid growth of ChatGPT is remarkable. As recently as December, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that users were sending over one billion requests to ChatGPT every day. According to the latest figures, the company’s search volume has more than doubled in around eight months.

The high usage figures also reflect the versatility of the tool: from simple questions and complex programming tasks to creative text creation, millions of people use ChatGPT for a wide range of applications. The AI assistant has established itself as an indispensable tool, particularly in areas such as education, content creation and software development.
