The US software giant Oracle plans to invest two billion US dollars in Germany over the next five years in order to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence applications and cloud infrastructure.
The sum of the equivalent of 1.7 billion euros will flow largely into the Rhine-Main region. Oracle’s cloud infrastructure is to be expanded in the greater Frankfurt area and capacities for artificial intelligence applications significantly increased.
Minister: Germany is the leading digital location in Europe
Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) said that Oracle’s strategic investment underlines the fact that Germany is an attractive location for digital innovation and investment. “The increasing demand for cloud solutions shows that the digital transformation is progressing well in our country.” This investment strengthens the digital infrastructure in Germany and enables companies and authorities to benefit from state-of-the-art AI and cloud technologies. “We want to continue along this path together with the economy and further expand Germany’s role as a leading digital location in Europe.”
Thorsten Herrmann, Senior Vice President and Country Leader Oracle Germany, said that with the billion-euro investment, Oracle is helping organizations across Germany to accelerate their AI and cloud transformation.
US companies invest in Germany as a business location
The world’s largest cloud companies, including Amazon AWS, Google and Microsoft, had previously announced investments in data centers in Germany. The Rhine-Main region is attracting an above-average number of these investments because Frankfurt is home to DE-CIX, one of the world’s largest internet hubs. This huge exchange point ensures high transmission speeds and short data transfer times.
Parallel to the investment decisions, however, there is a constant controversy as to whether the offerings of US companies meet the requirements of digital sovereignty in Germany. This debate has intensified since Donald Trump took office for the second time in the USA.
Oracle is one of the world’s largest software groups and a leader in database management systems and cloud solutions for companies. The US company, headquartered in Austin (Texas), competes primarily with the hyperscalers AWS, Google and Microsoft, but also with the German software group SAP.
