The software giant Microsoft is cutting several thousand jobs. The cuts will affect less than three percent of the workforce, as the company announced.
An exact figure was not given. As of the last available figures at the end of June 2024, Microsoft had around 228,000 employees, 126,000 of whom were in the USA. Three percent of this would be around 6,800 jobs.
The cuts are planned across various regions and employee levels, a spokesperson told the financial service Bloomberg. Microsoft had already cut around 10,000 jobs at the beginning of 2023. The workforce at large tech companies had grown significantly during the coronavirus pandemic.
Microsoft is currently investing heavily in data centers for artificial intelligence. Expenditure of around 80 billion dollars is planned for the current financial year alone, which runs until the end of June.
