The start-up DeepL is known for its translation software. Now the Cologne-based company is venturing into a larger field and launching an autonomous AI agent.
The Cologne-based start-up DeepL has presented an autonomous AI agent that can be used to optimize and automate many work processes in companies. The “DeepL Agent” is designed to work entirely within each user’s digital environment and respond to natural voice commands to carry out complex workflows safely and independently. According to the company, the tool can understand, think through and execute a wide range of tasks.
Agent can type and browse
The AI agent can interact with standard tools such as a keyboard and mouse and operate a browser. It can act on behalf of the user via existing interfaces. “It can handle almost any task that a human can perform with the help of computer systems. It moves seamlessly between users’ tools and workflows and continuously improves its own performance over time,” said the company’s CEO and founder, Jaroslaw Kutylowski.
The agent is designed to support a variety of business areas and use cases. For example, it can independently gather insights for sales teams, automate the processing of invoices in the finance department or take over the translation and approval of documents for localization, said the head of DeepL.
Strong competition
Kutylowski founded the company in 2017 as a competitor to services such as Google Translate and has asserted itself on the market. Since a second major financing round in May 2024, DeepL has been valued at two billion US dollars (1.85 billion euros). However, Germany’s most valuable AI start-up is facing strong competition. More and more users are using chatbots such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini to translate.
According to the company, DeepL is used by around 200,000 companies and public authorities as well as millions of private customers in 228 markets worldwide. The company now has around 1,000 employees.
