The security platform of the British cybersecurity provider Darktrace is growing: the company has acquired the American network traffic analyst Mira Security. Darktrace wants to use this to better analyze encrypted data streams in particular.
Active since 2013, cybersecurity provider Darktrace relies on machine learning to automatically identify and defend against threats in corporate networks. The company claims to protect almost 10,000 customers worldwide with its ActiveAI Security Platform.
Decryption as a key technology
The central promise of the acquisition: Darktrace and Mira Security want to work together to close the “blind spot of encrypted data” without compromising network performance or requiring complex infrastructure changes. Mira’s inline decryption technology is to be more closely integrated with Darktrace’s existing analysis tools in the future.
This combination is particularly interesting for highly regulated industries such as financial service providers, public authorities and critical infrastructures, as they often require seamless monitoring of data traffic. The integration should work in traditional data centers as well as in cloud and hybrid environments.
Development team is integrated
Mira Security’s technical staff work at locations in the USA and South Africa. These developers will now strengthen Darktrace’s research department, particularly in hardware-related network technology and the implementation of transmission protocols.
“Mira Security is already providing valuable insights for our AI algorithms and helping us deliver unparalleled detection and response capabilities at scale,” explains Darktrace Head of Strategy Phil Pearson. The deeper integration should accelerate innovation and further expand the market-leading network product.
Consolidation continues
Earlier this year, Darktrace had already acquired another security provider, Cado Security, in order to strengthen its cloud expertise. The pace of the takeover shows the pressure in the highly competitive cybersecurity market, where providers need to quickly acquire new technologies and expertise through acquisitions.
