OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT with a new function for learners. The so-called Study Mode is designed not only to provide answers, but also to promote understanding – with targeted guidance and interactive questions.

Study Mode: Targeted learning instead of quick solutions

OpenAI has introduced a new function in ChatGPT that is primarily intended for pupils, students and anyone who is eager to learn: Study Mode. This mode is not simply intended to provide users with the answer to a question, but to actively support the learning process. This is achieved through structured explanations, targeted queries and individual adaptation to the learner’s level.

Study Mode is now available for all registered users of the Free, Plus, Pro and Team versions of ChatGPT. The function will also be activated for ChatGPT Edu users in the coming weeks.

Learning aid instead of shortcut

ChatGPT has become one of the most popular digital learning tools in recent months. Millions of students around the world use it to prepare for exams, write assignments or get to grips with complex topics. But it is precisely this success that presents developers with a key challenge: how can we ensure that users don’t just access ready-made solutions, but actually learn something in the process?

This is exactly where the new Study Mode comes in. Instead of direct answers, users receive comprehensible explanations that are structured in individual steps. This is supplemented by questions that are based on the learner’s level of knowledge and tailored to their individual learning objectives. The aim is not only to solve the task, but also to deepen understanding of the subject matter.

Developed with education professionals

The Study Mode is based on a sophisticated system of instructions that OpenAI designed together with teachers, researchers and didactics experts. Fundamental principles of learning were taken into account: active participation, cognitive relief, promotion of self-reflection and metacognitive thinking as well as a healthy dose of curiosity.

Feedback also plays a central role. Users receive constructive feedback that supports them in improving their understanding – not just in solving a specific task.
