Tech billionaire Elon Musk intends to create a competitor to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. An alternative called Grokipedia is being developed at his AI company xAI, Musk wrote on the platform X, which he also owns.
Wikipedia articles are created and edited by users. However, Musk has long claimed that the encyclopedia is not objective and has a left-leaning political orientation. He himself is known for clearly right-wing views. Musk’s associate David Sacks, who was appointed AI czar by President Donald Trump, criticized shortly before the announcement that Wikipedia is being used to train artificial intelligence software.
The name of Musk’s encyclopedia is derived from xAI’s chatbot Grok. Musk had consistently announced that Grok should be an AI software that seeks the truth. In recent months, however, Grok caused controversy with antisemitic statements. Musk’s company blamed faulty programming for this.
