ChatGPT inventor OpenAI has released a new AI model that can be customized by other developers and also runs locally on a notebook.

OpenAI is also reacting to the Chinese competitor software Deepseek, which shocked the industry around a year ago.

OpenAI has published two so-called “open weight” models. In this case, “open weights” refers to parameters with which an AI model works. Developers can view and adapt them. This is why such models are often used by companies that only run artificial intelligence on their own servers and tailored to their needs. However, OpenAI does not make public which data was used to train the software.

The model with the name GPT-oss-120b can run on a graphics card and the slimmer GPT-oss-20b model can also run on a laptop with 16 gigabytes of RAM. This opens up new possibilities for OpenAI to bring the AI software to more types of device. Like other AI programs, the models can write software codes and research the web for a user. They only create text and not images or videos.
