Dropbox is pulling the plug on its password manager Dropbox Passwords and recommends switching to 1Password. The end of October is the final end.

Dropbox announces that it is withdrawing from the competitive password manager market. The company is giving its users until the end of October to back up their data stored in Dropbox Passwords.

Multi-stage phase-out begins in August

The withdrawal will take place gradually: From August 28, users will only be able to view their access data, not edit it. At the same time, the automatic input function in the app and browser extension will be deactivated.

Two weeks later, on September 11, the mobile application will cease its service completely. Access to the stored information only remains possible via the browser. On October 28, the service will finally be discontinued – all user data will be irrevocably deleted.

Concentration on core business

Launched in 2020, the feature was initially reserved for premium customers before being made available to all Dropbox users a year later. Like comparable services, it offered encrypted storage of login data, automatic completion of web forms and alerts in the event of security incidents.

Dropbox is promoting its competitor 1Password as the successor solution, which will be subject to a charge after a test phase. The company justifies the decision to discontinue the product with the strategic realignment to “improve the main functions of our core product”.
