According to US President Donald Trump, American AI models do not have to comply with copyright laws.
“When someone reads a book or an article, they have acquired extensive knowledge. But that doesn’t mean they are breaking copyright law or have to sign contracts with every content provider,” he argued at a summit on artificial intelligence. After his speech, he signed several decrees aimed at approving data centers for the government more quickly and promoting the use of American AI models in other countries.
From now on, the aim will be to “do everything we can to be a world leader in the field of artificial intelligence”, said the Republican. Trump was convinced that AI could not develop successfully in the USA “if you have to pay for every single article, book or anything else you read or study”.
Trump is important for the American tech industry
In the USA, the most important AI companies include the ChatGPT developer OpenAI, Microsoft and the chip company Nvidia. They are in a race against each other and are also competing with foreign companies such as the Chinese start-up DeepSeek.
Last year, the American tech industry had largely placed its bets on Trump – in the hope that he would relax or abolish regulatory hurdles for the industry in the White House.
