Users of the Starlink satellite internet service reported massive connection problems on Monday. Downdetector recorded over 30,000 disruption reports in the USA. Reports of another total outage pile up on social media.

Less than a month after the last major outage, Starlink is once again struggling with significant network problems. At around 1:56 PM Eastern Time, users across America and worldwide began to complain about connection problems. The outage monitoring platform Downdetector registered over 30,000 reports in the USA alone, with additional reports coming in from users in Canada and other regions. On X, reports vary. Some users say that their Starlink service is already available again, while others are still complaining about problems.

Deja vu: Software problems again?

The current outage is strongly reminiscent of the massive disruption on July 25, when Starlink experienced one of its biggest outages to date. According to Michael Nicolls, Vice President of Starlink Technology, thousands of users across the United States were without an internet connection for around two and a half hours.

“The outage was due to the failure of key internal software services that run the core network,” Nicolls explained in an X post at the time. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also publicly apologized: “Sorry for the outage. SpaceX will fix the root cause to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”

Waiting for root cause analysis

SpaceX has not yet commented on the current disruption. Users are hoping that the problems will be resolved quickly and, above all, that a sustainable solution will be found to prevent further outages of this kind. After the July incident, Musk promised to “fix the root cause.”
