According to The Wall Street Journal, the investment company Apollo Global Management is examining the sale of AOL. This is due to unsolicited purchase inquiries received by the financial investor.
According to industry circles, the value of AOL is currently estimated at around 1.5 billion US dollars. However, it remains to be seen whether a transaction will actually take place. Apollo acquired the company together with Yahoo from Verizon in 2021. The total price was five billion dollars.
AOL is currently expected to generate around 400 million dollars in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA). The business model is mainly based on data protection software and the web portal AOL.com with the associated e-mail service.
Farewell to dial-up Internet
The former online giant made a name for itself in the 1990s with free access disks, e-mail services and the instant messenger AIM. AOL will not finally discontinue its dial-up Internet service until the end of the month. This marks the end of a chapter in Internet history that older users in particular associate with the characteristic connection noises of the modem.
