Google is expanding its security options with a social component. Trusted contacts can now assist with account recovery without gaining access to user data.

Google has unveiled a new account recovery feature that relies on interpersonal trust. The “Recovery Contacts” feature allows users to designate friends or relatives as helpers in case they lose access to their own Google account.

Trusted contacts as gatekeepers

The new solution establishes a social safety net. Users can designate up to ten people from their personal circle as recovery contacts. In the event of a lockout, the process works through a code system: the locked-out user contacts one of their trusted contacts and transmits a code. The helper receives a notification via email or push message, enters the code, and thereby confirms the user’s identity. Account recovery can then be authorized.

Google assures that recovery contacts never gain access to the account or personal data at any point. According to the company, the feature only activates when other recovery options fail.

Setup through security settings

Configuration takes place in the Google account settings under the “Security & Sign-in” section. After entering contact details, an invitation is sent that must be accepted within seven days. Google has created a dedicated support page with step-by-step instructions.

The global rollout of the feature has already begun, though full availability for all users will still take some time. Interested users can check whether the feature is already activated for their account at g.co/recovery-contacts.
